According to local Welsh tradition the term 'Bluestone' refers to a stone known to geologists as 'Spotted Dolerite'. This stone only occurs in one place in the entire world, the Preseli Mountains. When cut in any direction Bluestone will display a pattern that bears a remarkable resemblance to the cosmos. For this reason it is considered by many to be sacred or magic. Many archaeologists now accept that the existence of the strange pattern in the stone was probably the reason why the ancient people of Britain chose to use it for Stonehenge. Myth: One day, shortly after the world was created, the sun rose above Stone Carn. Never had such a day been known and the mount became so hot that it began to turn to water. When night fell every star in the sky was shining brilliantly and all could be seen reflected in the glistening surface of the mount. As night wore on it became very cold and the mount turned back to stone, capturing the reflection of the sky forever.
